A small wind storm... nothing like what other's experienced, but it was freaky! The remnants of Hurricane Ike brought wind, not rain to the Tri-State Sunday, causing widespread damage and power outages. At one point about 90 percent of Duke Energy Corp.s 800,000 local customers were without power, according to WCPO-TV. Duke said it might take a week to get everyones lights back on. Power is on in downtown Cincinnati, however. Winds of 55 miles per hour reportedly gusting over 70 mph toppled trees, tore siding from houses and spread debris widely over a three-to-four-hour period Sunday afternoon. Most schools closed on Monday. Three people two in Oxford and one in Mount Healthy were killed by falling trees. Damage ranged from blown-off roofs and toppled chimneys, to fallen t...

The day had started out breezy, but I had no idea the winds would evolve into much more than just breezes and ordinary gusts. What initially appeared to me as ordinary pre-thunderstorm gusts of winds were actually 50 mph gales, and you can see the ground littered with tiny broken sticks and leaf clusters from the large oak tree directly over the car on which I was working.

An uncertain number of people drowned in overturned boats in the Ohio River. The greatest tragedies developed in the collapse of buildings along West Sixth Street and a house on West Eighth. Eighteen people died in the collapse of five buildings on Sixth Street and another 11 people died when two nearby houses collapsed.

A wind storm from Hurricane Ike threw a knockout punch at the Tri-State on Sept. 14, 2008, cutting power to 782,000 of Duke's 900,000 customers and paralyzing some neighborhoods and communities for up to a week. Five people - three in the Cincinnati area, two in nearby Indiana - were killed by falling trees in wind gusts that topped 70 mph and set a record of 74 mph at CVG - approaching the force of a category 1 hurricane (sustained winds of 74-95 mph). No one expected or was prepared for what happened. One weather expert called it "a 100-year storm." High winds had been been predicted, but when they arrived early on Sunday afternoon, they had combined with a cold front from the north and created the Perfect Storm. "We have never seen anything like this. Never. Were talking about 90 percent of our customers without power," Duke Energy spokesperson Kathy Meinke said.
