• Cincinnati Wind Storm 9/14/08- Hurricane Ike #2

Certainly no where near the extent of the damage seen when a full-force hurricane hits a coastal region, but the damage done to the tri-state area around Cincinnati was extensive nonetheless. We in Cincinnati are not used to 75mph winds, and our overhead powerlines certainly weren't designed for such. In the Cherry Grove area (Anderson Township), electricity had been off at my home for five out of the six days following the storm, coming back on finally Saturday afternoon. For some reason, it was on briefly Tuesday for a day, then went back off for several more days until Saturday. Most of the damage around my neighborhood was downed tree linbs, and the occasional tree having fallen over onto someone's roof. In this video, I was working on a car in my driveway, completely unaware of the in...

I did nothing to alter this video. What you are seeing and hearing is extremely unusual. Hurricane Ike (what was left of it) blew through Cincinnati with 50 - 75mph winds. The whistling sound you hear is the strong winds whipping through the metal high tension electric wire supports. This video was recorded behind the McDonald's on Mt. Carmel- Tobasco Rd, off of Beechmont Ave, in Cincinnati.

  • 1915 Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Deadly Wind Storm 38 Deaths

Postcards from the great storm of 1915 that hit Cincinnati, Ohio hard! A vicious wind and rainstorm swept southwestern Ohio on the evening of Wednesday July 7, 1915. The death toll of 38 at Cincinnati is the greatest known in Ohio for a windstorm in which no tornadoes were involved. The wind caused extensive damage throughout Cincinnati and in nearby communities. There were no reports of tornadoes and the damage was all toward one direction, so the wind is presumed to have been the result of thunderstorm microbursts. Homes, apartment houses, and commercial buildings were demolished or unroofed by the winds. Wires, signs, trees, cars, and streetcars were blown over in downtown Cincinnati. Most of the deaths were in collapsed buildings although three men died when a train carrying racehor...

At one point about 90 percent of Duke Energy Corp.s 800,000 local customers were without power, according to WCPO-TV. Duke said it might take a week to get everyones lights back on. The day had started out breezy, but I had no idea the winds would evolve into much more than just breezes and ordinary gusts. What initially appeared to me as ordinary pre-thunderstorm gusts of winds were actually 50 mph gales, and you can see the ground littered with tiny broken sticks and leaf clusters from the large oak tree directly over the car on which I was working.

An uncertain number of people drowned in overturned boats in the Ohio River. The greatest tragedies developed in the collapse of buildings along West Sixth Street and a house on West Eighth. Eighteen people died in the collapse of five buildings on Sixth Street and another 11 people died when two nearby houses collapsed.

As most of you know Brian and I average 1 injury every six months and they seem to be progressively getting worse (Trike accident Oct 2007, Car Accident March 2008, RollerSailing accident Sept 2008). I hope this isn't a bad sign. ;) --Let's cross our fingers that this does not continue. **************************************** *************Updated info************* **************************************** Ok so apparently we weren't the first people to come up with this but gosh darnit we thought of it on our own! check this link out... http://embeecon.com/RollerSail/index.htm P.S. I like how the guy mentioned the cost of sail is $30, "Not including the trip to the ER'. --very true 11/14/08 -Brian's cast is off and his hand is healing well through physical therapy. --His chin healed fast -a week after the accident.
